  59. sector on the disk, then take it to an IBM shop to "unformat" it.
  60. Norton Utilities has an unformat utility; however I'm not aware of
  61. how it works (I don't think the format process writes zeros to all
  62. the sectors, I think it just re-maps them--?)

  86. No, the format uses the WRITE_TRACK command on the FDC...  The whole track
  87. is written over with some gaps between the sectors, and some header info.  The
  88. sectors themselves are written with a 'virgin' value, usually $E5.  The norton
  89. utilities won't do it, I think the way that they work is to use a
  90. non-destructive format (that is, read the sectors, write the track, write the
  91. sectors).  It is IMPOSSIBLE to recover a formatted disk.

  116. No it's not.  It's just very difficult and you need some expensive equipment.
  117. The reason it's still possible is because very seldom do the read/write heads
  118. line up in the EXACT same place for a given track so there is usually
  119. some of the old information available.  It is like this:

  136. So if you have the correct equipment and know enough about how a given
  137. disk system stores information, you can read the disk bit for bit using
  138. a track density about five times higher then the original and then pick
  139. out the stuff you want.  If you know what was written over (E5 E5 E5 for
  140. most ataris) then it is even easier to find your original data.  Even
  141. when you actually write directly over the top of data it is possible to
  142. read ghost images from the disk, again with the correct equipment.

  191. DC No-Stic will prevent hard disk stiction from happening.  Stiction
  192. was such a problem with Seagate drives that they put in circuitry to
  193. move the hard disk heads after a length of disk inactivity.  DC
  194. No-Stic emulates this logic.

  236.      Well, I know about function prototyping.  The problem is that
  237. I had ANSI compatibility switched off.  Now in that case the compilers
  238. I've used has supported forward and backward references without
  239. function declarations.  In effect making them "old style K & R C."
  240.  
  241.      As far as I know, ANSI's spec doesn't tell you whether a compiler
  242. is going to be restricted regarding forward referencing when ANSI
  243. compatibility is "disabled".  (An interesting point of logical reasoning
  244. there. :-)  So properly, it's a subject for the manual to discuss in
  245. an appropriate place.  I'd put it in the general description of the
  246. compiler.  Alternatively, it might be mentioned in the area of compiler
  247. switches.  If possible, it should be *everywhere* that one might reasonably
  248. look for it.

  250.      So far, I think the Lattice C compiler will be a very satisfactory
  251. compiler (subject to that 1 major compiler bug that I seem to have
  252. hit in my most important project), but the 1st edition manual is
  253. annoyingly deficient in many ways.  I hope I'll be able to arrange to
  254. buy an updated manual.

  323. I have started using mint.  I have bash, mgr, ksh.  I had to dig out
  324. an old copy of mg (micro-gnu emacs) to do editing, as my vi and emacs
  325. crashed mint.  So I have a basic system and want more.  Several of the
  326. sample scripts/setups with mint referenced other utilities but I don't
  327. know where to find them.  I have rummaged through archive, but it is
  328. difficult to try to find mint compatible progs/utils etc.
  329.  
  330. I would appreciate any pointers to archives or utils/progs that are mint
  331. compatible.  I would also enjoy working on the mint system (in all of
  332. my spare time :-) if needed.

  410. As far as I know the complier was written by Joerg Lohse (currently
  411. working at the University of Hamburg). But I don't think he is involved
  412. in supporting the compiler any more.

  436.     As a staff member of Current Notes magazine I am gratified, as was our 8
  437. bit editor, at the support that Lauren Howard showed in his unsolicited
  438. testimonial.  All I can say is "Aw, shucks, guys.  Thanks."

  440.     I would, however, like to dispell the notion that CN is a user group
  441. publication.  It did start out that way, but it has since evolved into a
  442. commercial enterprise that more or less pays its own way because people
  443. like Ben Poehland, myself, and others put a lot of work and love into it.
  444. There is no way any Atari magazine could afford the staff that Current
  445. Notes has.

  474. the company -- the company is now putting out a PC rag, "PC Home
  475. Journal.")
  476.         And speaking of Start, is anybody else having trouble
  477. collecting money owed for articles printed?  Antic Publishing has
  478. owed me over $1,800 for nigh six months now and is refusing to
  479. acknowledge that I exist, despite the fact that I've been to Small
  480. Claims and won a settlement against them.  The money guy there,
  481. Chris Ballard, won't even call me back -- even though I've
  482. threatened to send in the sheriff to start impounding stuff.
  483.         And since the company still exists, shouldn't we subscribers
  484. be getting reimbursement for undelivered issues?  Or issues of
  485. another magazine?

  501. May Kay Petersen asks if anyone has any experience with Phasar 4.0.  I have
  502. used this product extensively for the last 3 or 4 years.  I could not live
  503. without it.  I published a lengthy tutorial on it in Current Notes in the
  504. March 1990 issue.

  506. Perhaps some one close to you can lend you a copy.
  507.  
  508. The package makes keeping home finances very simple.  It lacks the beauty of
  509. MacIntax when tax time comes, but it does let you create your own forms to
  510. do the arithmetic.
  511.  
  512. The program has many "help" features built in.  I find it to be very robust.
  513. Some GEM snobs turn up their noses at the screens, but the program does
  514. work quite well.
  515.  
  516. I especially appreciate the way it handles transfers between accounts.  It does
  517. have limits on the number of accounts and the number of transactions, but I
  518. doubt that these would be significant on a 1 Meg ST handling a set of
  519. personal or family accounts.

  550. In Germany, the distributor of Turbo C is now Application Systems, Heidelberg
  551. (ASH), better: of the successor of TC called PureC.
  552.  
  553. PureC is a complete development system (graphics shell-editor-Ansi C compiler-
  554. assembler-debugger-linker). It will cost about 400.- DM. The Developpers of
  555. Pure-Software have also done the developpement of TC 2.0.
  556. Users of Laser-C and Megamax  C will automatically be offered an update to
  557. Pure-C.

  588. running on chinet (running Interactive Sys V r 5, I believe), and failed.  If
  589. someone knows the proper incantations to compile a publicly-available version
